he Department of Government Efficiency estimates that canceling three annual leases for Office of Personnel Management locations in Butler County will save $749,773. The leases being terminated are related to the Boyers location and an East Butler location. According to the department's website, the total savings from terminating a lease at Boyers is $526,052, while another lease there will result in a savings of $156,900.
Butler County Commissioner Kim Geyer clarified that the underground mine in Boyers is not closing, as it is a private corporation and OPM is just one of its tenants. The occupied space at Boyers is larger than the 14,950 total square-feet included in the two leases being terminated. An anonymous employee for OPM confirmed this information.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has announced that nearly 750 lease terminations will eliminate 9,587,384 square feet of real estate and save about $468 million. While layoffs have not been confirmed, an OPM staff member expressed concern that cuts to space could precede staffing reductions. The employee cited a recent post on X praising OPM's digital retirement process as evidence that their work is valued.
The DOGE has also announced plans to reduce IT spending by 80% while maintaining equivalent levels of service, with $370 million budgeted for OPM's IT services. Future cost-cutting measures are expected to be listed on the department's website.
