radford Allen's plans to expand in Arlington Heights have hit a snag after the developer's bid to purchase a former school district headquarters building was rejected. The Chicago-based company offered $5.45 million, exceeding the district's original price by $100,000, but the District 214 board voted 4-2 against the sale. Board member Bill Dussling cited the property's potential for future appreciation as a reason to retain it.
The 24,000-square-foot building on 6.5 acres was previously used as the administrative hub for Elk Grove Township Elementary District 59 and was purchased by District 214 in 2022 under a lease-to-purchase agreement. The district had considered building a fine arts center on the site but ultimately abandoned those plans due to costs.
Bradford Allen is working to reshape Arlington Heights' southern corridor, with a multi-phase redevelopment project at Arlington Heights and Algonquin roads. The initial phase includes a 301-unit apartment complex and retail space, supported by $17.8 million in tax increment financing. Despite the setback, Bradford Allen has successfully added a former Guitar Center building to its assemblage, expanding its presence in the area.
