A
real estate agent in La Cañada Flintridge is facing charges for allegedly raising the rent of a rental property by 38% after the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the charges, saying they serve as a warning to those who would take advantage of people affected by disasters.
According to an investigation, a couple who lost their home in the Eaton fire applied to rent a house from Mike Kobeissi, but were told the price had increased by 38% after submitting their application. California law prohibits raising prices for rental properties and essential goods by more than 10% following a natural disaster.
Kobeissi claims he raised the price due to the home's proximity to a highly regarded school district, not because of the wildfires. He says he received offers from tenants willing to pay up to $16,000 per month, but chose to rent it for under $12,000 to fire victims and provided additional benefits.
The charges against Kobeissi are part of a broader effort by Bonta's office to combat price gouging in the wake of the wildfires. More than 11,000 homes were destroyed, leaving many families struggling to find affordable housing. Reports of widespread price gouging have been rampant, with some listings increasing by as much as 60%. Bonta has sent over 500 warning letters and launched multiple investigations into alleged price gougers.
