Catholic Diocese of Fall River Secures Lucrative Nantucket Property Deal

The Fall River Diocese sells six acres of Nantucket land for $4 million.

T
he Fall River Diocese's financial woes were temporarily alleviated in 2002 when it paid out $5 million to 68 individuals who claimed Father James Porter had abused them. The scandal left a lasting impact, eroding trust and leading to a decline in donations, parish consolidations, and church closures. Yet, the Diocese's real estate portfolio remains robust, comprising over 480 properties.

A recent sale of six acres off Millstone Road on Nantucket for $4 million to Cappo Real Estate Holdings, LLC, has generated attention. The buyer, Jeff Cappo, is a Michigan resident and owner of Victory Automotive Group, which operates over 50 dealerships nationwide. Cappo's ties to the Diocese are multifaceted; he is both a donor and supporter through his business and personal endeavors.

The transaction raised eyebrows as it was not publicly listed for sale by the Diocese. Church officials maintain that Cappo received no preferential treatment, but the deal has sparked questions about potential conflicts of interest. Notably, Victory Automotive Group agreed to pay $9 million in 2023 to settle allegations of providing false information in support of a Paycheck Protection Program loan forgiveness application.
