Chicago Fire Stadium Site Shortlisted at The 78 Development in Illinois

Related Midwest's Near South Side project emerges as top contender for Chicago Fire FC's new 25,000-seat stadium.

T
he Chicago Fire Football Club's search for a new 25,000-seat soccer stadium has narrowed to two top contenders: The 78 and Lincoln Yards. Related Midwest's Curt Bailey is in talks with owner Joe Mansueto about building a soccer-specific stadium at The 78, which could move forward quickly due to favorable zoning. This would allow the Fire to establish a permanent home, free from constraints imposed by sharing Soldier Field with the Chicago Bears.

The team is considering acquiring 7-10 acres at The 78, while Lincoln Yards would require rezoning, a potentially contentious process. Sterling Bay's financial difficulties and investors seeking to offload their stakes in the project also complicate matters. A stadium could accelerate both megadevelopments, which have seen little progress beyond initial infrastructure improvements.

Mansueto's commitment to privately financing the stadium sets him apart from other Chicago sports team owners who have sought taxpayer support. This approach has drawn attention for its independence and could set a precedent for future development projects in the city.
