he Chicagoland Association of Real Estate Attorneys (AREA) has evolved from a grassroots Zoom call during the pandemic into one of Illinois' most influential legal organizations. Founded in response to growing trends that sought to diminish the attorney's role in residential transactions, AREA advocates for the essential value lawyers bring to the table.

    Led by experienced attorneys, AREA's leadership is dedicated to consumer protection and public service. Founder Kelli Fogarty brings a deep commitment to these values, while current president Jason Chmielewski focuses on empowering first-time buyers through homeownership. Treasurer Stephanie Carlin Cerf offers nearly two decades of experience in client care, and longtime board member Michael Wasserman provides foundational wisdom.

    The board also includes Namit Bammi, who helps investors grow communities with a business-minded approach, and Dean Fugate, who believes complex contracts should be accessible and clearly written. AREA's mission is grounded in four principles: consumer education, industry collaboration, collegial support, and professional accountability. The organization's motto, "We Rise by Lifting Each Other," reflects its commitment to lifting not only colleagues but also the entire Illinois real estate community.

    Today, AREA comprises over 160 attorneys, many of whom are active in organizations such as the Illinois Real Estate Lawyers Association and National Association of Realtors. They have earned honors like Super Lawyers and Rising Stars, united by a belief in collaboration to protect clients and elevate the industry.
