hristopher Lloyd, the Emmy Award-winning actor best known for his roles in "Back to the Future," "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," and "Taxi," has listed his Montecito retreat for $6.38 million. The three-bedroom property, situated on 6 acres with sweeping ocean and mountain views, was purchased by Lloyd and his wife Lisa in 2017.
The couple had lived in the Santa Barbara area since the mid-1990s but their connection to the region deepened after a 2008 fire destroyed their prior residence. They rebuilt before finding this West Mountain Drive property, which they transformed into a serene oasis.
Lisa, who has remodeled over six homes and worked as a Sotheby's International Realty agent, took the lead in reshaping the 2,880-square-foot residence. Her vision softened what was once a cold, hard-edged contemporary, incorporating warm wood floors, Roman clay walls, and a seamless indoor-outdoor flow.
The renovation spanned over a year, requiring the couple to move out during construction. The updated kitchen, dining room, and primary bathroom feature custom finishes, while the exterior was re-landscaped with bluestone pathways, mature olive trees, and tall hedges creating a secluded atmosphere.
The main residence boasts two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and an open floor plan with walls of glass framing sunsets over the Pacific and Channel Islands. Sliding doors connect nearly every room to outdoor patios and gardens. A detached one-bedroom guest house serves as both visitor quarters and a creative studio.
The Lloyds' design collaborators included Santa Barbara firm DesignARC, landscape designer Kaylee Grub of Arcadia Studio, and Los Angeles artisan Patty Grant, though Lisa directed much of the work herself. The guiding philosophy was "slow living" – a deliberate, restorative lifestyle closely tied to the landscape.
Santa Barbara's luxury market has remained resilient even amid broader fluctuations in California real estate. Compass agent Arthur Kalayjian notes that demand for ocean-view properties remains strong, driven by buyers seeking a balance of lifestyle and investment. The city's reputation as a safe and timeless market continues to draw out-of-town buyers valuing tranquility and privacy.
For the Lloyds, the transformation was about feeling as much as it was about design. Christopher described the house as immediately restorative: "This home has been a special place for us, our sanctuary." The listing comes as Lloyd, now in his 80s, and Lisa look toward a new chapter.
