ity of Refuge has expanded its services in Columbia with the acquisition of a new building adjacent to its current facility. The purchase was made possible by a $750,000 grant from Boone County's American Rescue Plan Act allocation. The organization plans to use the new space for immigration legal services, a learning center, and an expanded culinary program.
The refugee resettlement and supportive services organization will convert the spaces in the building to meet its needs. Immigration legal services have already been launched, providing in-house support for families needing immigration resources. A future learning center will offer a safe space for education, community building, and belonging for both youth and adults.
City of Refuge's culinary training and employment initiative, City Cuisine, will also expand with a commercial kitchen renovation. The remaining spaces in the building will be leased to other organizations to ensure sustainability. Despite losing federal funding for refugee supportive services, City of Refuge continues to seek community support through monthly donations to fund its programs.
Executive Director Debbie Beal expressed gratitude to Boone County for recognizing the value of their work and helping them take this critical step forward. She emphasized the importance of community support, stating that monthly gifts fuel various programs, including empowerment initiatives, English Language Learning, employment training, and community support through Refugee Care.
