Coastal hotspot: America's most sought-after zip code

One coastal community is bucking affordability trends, with homes selling quickly.

T
he US housing market has faced significant challenges this year, driven by waning affordability and shifting buyer preferences. However, one coastal community is bucking the trend: Beverly, Massachusetts, with its 01915 ZIP code ranking as the nation's most desirable housing market.

Located just over 20 miles northeast of Boston, Beverly offers a unique blend of small-town charm, relative affordability, and easy access to job opportunities in the city. The town has seen significant growth, with major employers like CVS Health, the US Postal Service, and DoorDash calling it home.

According to Realtor.com's Hottest ZIP Codes rankings, which consider market demand and pace of sales, Beverly stands out for its limited supply and high demand. Homes in the area sold quickly, with a median time on the market of just 16 days in June. This is significantly lower than the national average of 53 days.

The median list price in Beverly has risen to $719,000, but it remains roughly 18% below the Boston metro average. Realtor.com Chief Economist Danielle Hale notes that buyers are increasingly seeking out areas with better value just outside of expensive urban cores. "These locations represent a sweet spot for shoppers who want suburban amenities and proximity to jobs without paying top-tier metro premiums," she says.

Beverly's affordability is also due in part to its slightly greater distance from Boston, compared to pricier suburbs like Newton and Arlington. The median list price per square foot in Beverly was nearly 3% lower than in Boston, making it an attractive option for buyers looking for more space at a lower cost.

Beyond its economic appeal, Beverly has a rich history and culture. Named after a city in England, the town was first settled in 1626 and is recognized as the "Birthplace of the American Navy." Visitors can explore historic landmarks like the Cabot Theatre and Lynch Park, or enjoy the town's highly rated school system and standout sports programs.

As Realtor.com notes, Beverly's success story highlights a broader trend in the housing market. With stubbornly high mortgage rates and affordability challenges, buyers are increasingly focusing on relative value rather than just low price tags. For those seeking suburban amenities and proximity to jobs without breaking the bank, Beverly is an attractive option that offers a unique blend of livability, space, and affordability.
