raig McCormick Smith was a man who lived life to the fullest, and his family knew it. When his oldest daughter Eliza was preparing for a scuba-diving trip in Papua New Guinea, he told her not to cancel, even though she was joking about needing a reason to do so. This was typical of Smith's adventurous spirit, which had driven him throughout his life. He built successful trucking and real estate businesses, but it was the experiences outside of work that truly brought him joy.
Smith spent decades working hard, but he always made time for travel, new experiences, and quality time with his family. His children remembered him as a devoted father who was gentle, kind, and protective, especially towards his daughters. He taught them to golf, fish, and ski, and they had many memorable trips together.
In his work life, Smith was known as a hard-nosed businessman, but those close to him knew he was a softie at heart. He was a loyal friend and family man who always put others first. After retiring from the real estate development business, Smith filled his days with travel, fly fishing, golfing, and spending time with loved ones.
Smith's children remembered him as a larger-than-life figure who loved to tell stories, often embellishing them for dramatic effect. But they also knew that he was a man of integrity, always honest and straightforward in both his personal and professional life. As he grew older, Smith became even softer and more loving, always ready with a fun anecdote or a joke.
Smith died on June 7 at the age of 82 after a battle with lung cancer. His family will remember him as a devoted father, husband, and friend who lived life to the fullest and inspired those around him to do the same. A memorial service is planned for October 25 in Naples, Florida.
