Crown Heights Development: Eichner's Project Faces City Council Vote

Crown Heights development's fate set to be decided at City Council zoning subcommittee meeting November 12.

T
he fate of Ian Bruce Eichner's Crown Heights project will be decided next week as it appears on the calendar for two City Council meetings. If a deal is reached between local Council member Crystal Hudson and Eichner's Continuum Companies, votes could take place on November 21. Representatives for Hudson were unavailable for comment, while an attorney for Continuum stated that discussions with the Council are "productive." The project has faced numerous setbacks, including a September announcement by Eichner to withdraw his application after the City Planning Commission modified the plan to include 355 units and 91-106 income-restricted apartments. However, last month Eichner expressed willingness to accept the new size if he could use a different affordability option under the city's Mandatory Inclusionary Housing program.

The Building and Construction Trades Council has scheduled a rally to urge Hudson to support the project, citing that many union households would qualify for the affordable units under the workforce option. The council's president, Gary LaBarbera, stated that limiting development projects will result in fewer pathways to the middle class, lower housing stocks, higher rents, and less good-paying career opportunities.

The project's fate is closely tied to a deal between Hudson and Eichner, with votes dependent on their agreement. If a resolution is reached, the City Council could vote on the project as early as November 21.
