David Duchovny Sells Malibu Estate for $12.5 Million

The star of "The X-Files" is selling his customized Southern California home.

D
avid Duchovny is hoping to find a buyer for his Malibu home, which he's listed for $12.5 million. The "X-Files" and "Californication" star built the ultra-modern residence from scratch after purchasing the property in 2016 for $4.75 million.

The three-bedroom main house spans 3,577 square feet on about an acre of land, with polished cement floors, soaring ceilings, and large glass doors that flood the living room with natural light. The open-concept space is a favorite of Duchovny's, featuring recessed lighting and skylights that connect to the outdoors through pivoting glass doors.

A chef's kitchen at the heart of the home boasts stone countertops, a five-burner range, and a hidden coffee station. The primary suite's sliding glass doors open up to an amenity-packed backyard with a lap pool, Jacuzzi, outdoor shower, cold plunge, outdoor kitchen, and sunken fire pit.

The property's most striking feature is the one-bedroom restored train caboose, which Duchovny wrote his 2021 novel "Truly Like Lightning" in and often records his podcast. He spent about $1 million renovating the space into a guesthouse with a sleeping area, built-in dining nook, bathroom with rainfall shower, and rooftop deck.

Duchovny is selling the property now that his children are grown, and Compass's Chris Cortazzo expects sales to pick up in Malibu following the reopening of the Pacific Coast Highway. Cortazzo notes that displaced residents are seeking homes in the area, drawn by its lifestyle and deeded access to a private beach entrance.
