Developer Celadon Secures Historic Harley Clarke Mansion Hotel Project

$29M investment may revamp Harley Clarke mansion into boutique hotel and event space.

A
$29 million investment from Celadon Construction is poised to breathe new life into the historic Harley Clarke mansion in Evanston, transforming it into a boutique hotel and event venue. The nonprofit subsidiary of Celadon Partners secured a 99-year lease with the city after outbidding competitors for the privilege to repurpose the lakefront property. Spanning 18,500 square feet at 2603 Sheridan Road, the development will feature a 10-key hotel, restaurant, ice cream parlor, and basement speakeasy, as well as renovations to the carriage house for Jens Jensen Gardens.

The project is expected to generate $1 million in annual tax revenue. This proposal comes after Evanston rejected a similar plan by Jennifer Prtizker in 2012 due to opposition to privatization. Celadon has a history of successfully adapting historic properties, including winning a preservation award for its work on the Maywood Supportive Living community.

Built in 1927 by architect Richard Powers for a wealthy utilities magnate, the mansion features Prairie School landscape design by Jens Jensen and is adjacent to the historic Grosse Pointe Light and Lighthouse Beach. The city of Evanston purchased the property in 1965 and leased it to the Evanston Art Center until 2015.
