Douglas Friedman sells Texas home for $2.99M in A-list desert town

West Texas home looks straight out of Architectural Digest, featuring high‑end design inside and out.

D
ouglas Friedman, the celebrated jet‑setting photographer, has listed his Marfa, Texas residence for $2.99 million—down from the $3.7 million asking price last February. The 10‑acre property sits beside expansive cattle ranch land and offers sweeping views of the Davis Mountains to the north and the Haystack Mountains to the east.

After a decade in the house, Friedman said it feels “finished,” prompting him to pursue new projects in West Texas and Eastern Long Island. “When a home feels finished, it’s time to move on and start again,” he explained to Gimme Shelter.

The 2,304‑square‑foot, three‑bedroom, two‑bath home was completed in 2017. Its open layout flows from a chef’s kitchen to a dining area with cozy chairs and panoramic vistas. Interior design credits go to Steven Gambrel, Nicole Hollis and Brigette Romanek, who incorporated de Gournay hand‑painted wallpaper, Isamu Noguchi lanterns and marble tables. The house’s floor‑to‑ceiling glass doors open onto a patio featuring a fire pit, a desert palapa, and a container lap pool with a hot tub. The pool was shipped from Canada, craned into a hole, and connected to utilities before the owners dove in the next day.

Friedman’s home has been highlighted in a new Rizzoli coffee‑table book, following its inclusion in Architectural Digest’s recent collection of the decade’s most remarkable homes. The Marfa area, a 2,000‑person town known for its art scene—home to sculptor Donald Judd and celebrities such as Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jay‑Z and Beyoncé—provides a creative backdrop for the property.

Key features include retractable screens that keep out dust and scorpions, a clerestory window band that floods the interior with daylight and creates a “glowing ribbon of light” at night, and floor‑to‑ceiling exposures that bathe the space in natural light. The bedroom’s burnt‑orange palette echoes the surrounding vegetation, while hidden storage and ample display areas accommodate cherished objects.

Grounds stewardship is evident: Friedman and his team have restored native grasslands, planted ten oak trees, and added mesquite and desert sage to form a grove near the shade structure, attracting birds and providing additional shade. The property’s proximity—just two miles from Marfa’s center and a three‑hour drive from El Paso’s airport—offers both seclusion and accessibility.

On Instagram, Friedman shares his delight in evening gatherings by the fire pit, watching the West Texas sky transition from hot pink to deep purple as constellations and the Milky Way unfold across the night. The listing is handled by Jeff Burke of Douglas Elliman’s Eklund Gomes Team.
