lemson University has appointed Tom Leathem as the new chair of the Nieri Department of Construction and Real Estate Development, effective July 1, 2025. Leathem brings a unique blend of industry expertise and academic experience to this role, having spent over a decade working in construction and real estate before joining Auburn University's faculty.
Leathem's vision for the department is ambitious: "I want us to be the gold standard for construction programs nationwide," he said. To achieve this goal, he plans to leverage Clemson's strong foundation of excellence in construction education, its extensive alumni network, and a supportive administration that prioritizes program growth.
A seasoned educator and researcher, Leathem has made significant contributions to construction education through his work at Auburn University. He is well-equipped to lead the Nieri Department forward, having previously taught collaborative studios between construction and architecture programs – an approach that aligns with Clemson's vision for inter-departmental collaboration.
Leathem will succeed Interim Chair Dhaval Gajjar, who has led the department since December. Under previous chair Professor Mike Jackson's tenure, the department experienced remarkable growth, including a 100% hired-before-graduation rate for its undergraduates and back-to-back championships in the Associated Builders and Contractors' annual Construction Science and Management Competition.
As he takes the reins, Leathem is eager to build on this momentum. "I believe that with great people, a strong focus on students, and a commitment to advancing research, we can achieve greatness," he said. With his passion, energy, and industry expertise, Leathem is poised to lead the Nieri Department of Construction and Real Estate Development to new heights.
