Elizabeth Gilbert lists NYC co-op for $1.19M, where she coped with partner's loss

Gilbert found solace in the 224 E. 17th St. unit after Rayya Elias' passing from cancer.

A
uthor Elizabeth Gilbert, known for her memoir "Eat, Pray, Love," has relisted her Gramercy Park home for $1.19 million after initially asking $1.49 million earlier this year. She purchased the property in 2017 for $1.69 million and will be selling it at a loss.

Gilbert considers the apartment her sanctuary and writing cocoon, where she recovered from the loss of her partner Rayya Elias. The home's design was intentional, with built-in bookcases framing the writing space and pops of color adding depth to the room. Gilbert hopes that the next owner will find creative inspiration in the space.

The sun-filled one-bedroom apartment at 224 E. 17th St. (also known as 1 Rutherford Place) was built in 1855 as a townhouse. It features striking oversize casement windows, white oak floors, and an elegant open living and dining room with a windowed kitchen. Gilbert wrote her novel "City of Girls" in the apartment, which is also where she found solace during her grief.

Gilbert has since moved to New Jersey, where she spends her days writing and traveling. She's letting go of the apartment, saying it served its purpose as a sanctuary during a difficult time in her life. The listing broker is Jessica Taylor and Ravi Kantha of Serhant.

The apartment's history is steeped in magic, with Gilbert believing that the space was designed specifically for a writer. She's curious to see who will be the next creative person to inhabit the space and make use of its unique energy.

Elizabeth Gilbert's NYC co-op listed for sale, a space of grief and healing.
