race Hightower, ex-wife of actor Robert De Niro, has sold their Central Park West co-op for $18 million. The five-bedroom duplex was originally purchased in 2006 for $20.9 million, resulting in a loss for the couple.
The property, located at 88 Central Park West, underwent significant renovations after a 2012 fire that displaced Hightower and De Niro for nearly a year. They rented properties during this time before returning to their home, which features a corner primary bedroom with park views, multiple walk-in closets, and living spaces downstairs.
The co-op market has faced downward pressure recently, according to Leonard Steinberg of Compass, the listing broker. The median price for units with four or more bedrooms dropped from $4.9 million last year to $3.5 million this year, while studio prices remained relatively unchanged.
Hightower and De Niro's divorce proceedings drew attention during the pandemic, with De Niro citing financial difficulties tied to his co-founded Nobu Hospitality chain. The couple married in 1997 and separated in 2018.
The property was previously owned by film producer Harvey Weinstein, who sold it before Hightower and De Niro purchased it for $20.9 million. The building has attracted notable residents, including musician Sting and photographer Annie Leibovitz, who recently sold her co-op at a loss.
Hightower plans to move on from their former shared home, revealing that she is looking for a new place surrounded by nature. "Coming from Mississippi, I grew up on a farm," she said. "I do a lot of walking and meditating as I walk."
