Ex-New York Times Chairman Unloads Lincoln Square Co-Op for $7 Million

Arthur Sulzberger Jr. Sells Lincoln Square Co-op Penthouse for $6.75 Million

A
rthur Sulzberger Jr., former chairman and publisher of the New York Times, has sold his Lincoln Square penthouse at 171 West 71st Street for $6.75 million. The four-bedroom duplex was a combination of two apartments purchased in 2011 for $3.9 million and 2015 for $2.8 million. Sulzberger listed the property last October with an initial price tag of $7.7 million, which he later reduced to $7.3 million before finding a buyer in August.

The renovated duplex features four bathrooms, a private rooftop garden, and a chef's kitchen, spanning 3,200 square feet. The sale is notable as it was the priciest transaction ever achieved in the building, although it closed for roughly the same amount as Sulzberger paid for the two original properties.

Tamir Shemesh of Nest Seekers represented the buyers, Eric Wolff and his wife Courtney Elizabeth Mauk, a novelist who has published three books. Shemesh attributed the sale to New York City's resilience in the high-end market, even with broader economic fluctuations. The Dorilton building, where Sulzberger's penthouse is located, offers amenities such as a live-in superintendent and storage, and allows 75 percent financing.

Sulzberger served as chairman of the Times from 1997 to 2020 and publisher from 1992 to 2018, overseeing significant expansions during his tenure. His son, AG Sulzberger, now leads the newspaper as chairman and publisher.
