allingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic home, is facing a major restoration project due to numerous leaks and structural issues. The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, the property's steward, has estimated that repairs will cost $7 million, a staggering 40 times more than its original construction price of $148,000 in the 1930s.

    The home, which sits over a waterfall, is a masterpiece of organic architecture but also poses significant maintenance challenges. The conservancy has been working to fix dozens of leaks and address deteriorated reinforced concrete, among other issues. The project, which began three years ago, is now at its midway point and includes pumping liquid grout into leaky walls, replacing roofing assemblies, and conserving steel window and doorframes.

    The preservation efforts are part of a 20-year plan to ensure Fallingwater's longevity for future generations. The property received UNESCO World Heritage site designation in 2019, joining Independence Hall in Philadelphia as one of only two Pennsylvania sites on the list.

    Justin Gunther, Fallingwater's director, notes that water is the main natural force they're trying to combat with a house like this. The project has been impacted by pandemic-era supply shortages and inflation, causing original estimates to more than double. A state grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is covering part of the costs, while private foundations and individuals are contributing the remaining funds.

    The famous American architect designed over 1,000 buildings, but fewer than half were built. Fallingwater has received significant attention in recent months due to its scaffolding, which should be removed by April for the regular tour season. The conservancy is offering "Preservation-in-Action" tours next month, giving visitors a unique glimpse into the complexities of the preservation project.
