Family of deceased resident sues assisted-living facility over fatal blaze.

Resident Sues Facility Manager After Fire at Fall River, MA Complex.

A
resident of the Gabriel House, an independent and assisted-living facility in Fall River, MA, has filed a civil lawsuit against the company that manages the complex. The fire on July 13, 2025, killed 10 people and injured dozens more, including Steven Oldrid, who survived but suffered severe injuries.

Oldrid alleges that the facility was not properly managed, staffed, or maintained, which became apparent during the fire. He claims that he was unable to exit the building without assistance due to his physical condition and reliance on an electric wheelchair. The lawsuit states that Oldrid's compromised physical state made it difficult for him to escape the burning building.

Oldrid's attorney, Robin Gouveia, notes that the facility's evacuation plan was inadequate. During a fire or emergency, elevators are typically taken out of service, but Oldrid's room was on the third floor and he had no way to exit without assistance. The lawsuit also claims that there were not enough staff members on duty at the time of the fire.

Gouveia states that Oldrid had been warned about a fire emergency through a sign on his apartment door, which instructed residents to close their doors and wait for assistance. However, this was deemed an inadequate warning by Gouveia. Oldrid suffered smoke inhalation, respiratory distress, and loss of consciousness due to being trapped in his room.

The lawsuit also alleges that the facility had other safety issues, including a lack of adequate staffing and enforcement of rules against smoking. Despite a "no smoking" policy, many residents smoked in their rooms without consequence. The Gabriel House management has promised to cooperate with investigators, but Gouveia believes that multiple offenses contributed to the disaster.

Oldrid is still recovering from his physical and emotional injuries, which have been complicated by underlying medical issues. His lawsuit seeks compensation for his damages and losses.
