Florida Man Charged in Cold Case Murder from Decades Past

Jeffrey Taylor, 64, arrested for 1986 murder of real estate broker Shirley Brant during attempted robbery.

A
64-year-old man, identified as a "career criminal," has been arrested in connection with the nearly 40-year-old cold-case murder of a Florida real estate broker. Jeffrey Taylor was taken into custody on Thursday for the killing of Shirley Brant, who was shot and killed during an attempted robbery at her office in North Miami Beach on June 13, 1986.

A fingerprint found at the crime scene, which had previously been deemed insufficient as evidence, was re-examined through the Automated Fingerprint Identification System in 2023. The match led investigators to Taylor, who is now charged with second-degree murder with a firearm.

According to police, two men entered Brant's office on the day of her murder, and one of them pulled the trigger after she screamed "Don't shoot!" A coworker witnessed the incident, which left a lasting impact on those who knew Brant. Her son, Ben Brant, expressed gratitude towards detectives for their tireless efforts to solve the case.

Brant was a pioneering figure in her field, known for breaking down barriers and giving back to her community through philanthropy. Her husband had passed away before Taylor's arrest, but he had hired a private investigator to ensure justice was served.
