Florida real estate agent, Jason Valiant, has been arrested on multiple charges after allegedly scamming an elderly couple who became ill. According to Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, Valiant listed himself as the power of attorney and health care surrogate for the couple using fraudulent documents when they were hospitalized. He then drained their bank accounts, stole properties worth $1.6 million, and used their credit card to pay for personal expenses.
Chitwood described the scheme as "pure, pure evil," saying it was one of the most egregious cases he had ever seen. Valiant allegedly created fake low offers on the couple's property, including one from his own real estate company, before taking control of their finances and assets. A DNR order was signed for one of the victims, who was later removed from life support.
Valiant faces charges including organized scheme to defraud, exploitation of an elderly or disabled adult, and grand theft. To protect yourself from similar scams, it's essential to keep sensitive documents secure, monitor your bank statements regularly, and be cautious when granting power of attorney to others. If you suspect real estate fraud, contact local authorities and freeze accounts immediately.
