Former A&N owner's estate leads February home sales

1960s Modern House Renovation: Sternheimer's Design to be Revamped and Documented on Instagram

T
he top area sale in February was a modern-design house at 200 Kanawha Drive, which sold for $1.8 million on February 8. The 6,600-square-foot home was listed by Blake Eudailey with BHHS PenFed Realty for the family of the late Anne and Mark Sternheimer, who had owned it since its construction in the early 1960s.

Mark Sternheimer, a retail executive and jeweler, passed away in October, while his wife Anne, a nurse and pilot, died in 2003. The buyers, a married couple relocating to the area, made an all-cash deal using separate LLCs for each transaction. They were represented by Darren Brown with The Steele Group | Sotheby's International Realty.

The two-story foyer features a floating curved staircase, while the living/dining room boasts a two-story cathedral ceiling, stone fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling windows. The updated kitchen includes a dumbwaiter and opens to a Florida room overlooking the grounds. The property also has seven bedrooms and eight full bathrooms.

Eudailey received three offers on the house, which he listed separately from an adjacent 1-acre lot that was sold for $1 million. Brown said his clients competed with two other offers and were drawn to the home's unique mid-century modern design inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The buyers plan to renovate the house and will document their progress on Instagram under the handle "keepingkanawha." The sale of 200 Kanawha Drive was the top area sale in February, marking a cooling of the high-end residential real estate market after months of sales above $3 million.
