Fruit Fly Infestation at Home: Effective Solutions for Eradication

Fruit flies are notorious household pests notoriously difficult to eliminate.

F
ruit flies are notorious household pests that seem impossible to get rid of, driven by their attraction to food, garbage, and other sources of sustenance.

A TikTok user recently sparked a heated debate about the best ways to eliminate these pesky insects after sharing her own struggles with an infestation. Sarah Molnar, a personal trainer from upstate New York, posted a video expressing her horror at the sheer number of fruit flies buzzing around her home. Despite using a plug-in LED trap that had been effective in catching dozens of flies, she continued to find them elsewhere in her house.

Molnar's candid video quickly went viral, with many viewers sharing their own experiences with similar infestations. Several people commented that they too were struggling with fruit fly problems this year, suggesting that the issue may be more widespread than initially thought.

Some TikTok users offered potential solutions to the problem, including using baking soda and boiling water to scrub drains, pouring cinnamon sticks into fruit bowls, or treating drains nightly with plastic covers. However, a few viewers disputed Molnar's claim of having fruit flies, suggesting instead that she might have drain flies or fungus gnats.

Experts at Arrow Exterminators suggest that fruit flies often enter homes through gaps in walls and around doors or windows, or via eggs laid inside produce from the grocery store. According to their advice, a potent trap can be created using apple cider vinegar and dish soap. By filling a bowl with the mixture, covering it with plastic wrap, and poking holes in the top, homeowners may be able to catch and eliminate fruit flies more effectively.
