FTC files suit against Zillow, Redfin over rental agreements

Federal agency says Zillow broke antitrust laws by paying $100M to become Redfin’s multifamily listings provider.

F
TC files suit against Zillow and Redfin, alleging the pair conspired to crush competition in the rental‑listing market. The Sept. 30 complaint claims Zillow paid Redfin $100 million to become the sole provider of multifamily listings on Redfin’s platform, as well as on Rent.com and ApartmentGuide.com. Consequently, Redfin halted its own multifamily advertising operations and stopped competing for Internet Listing Service (ILS) advertising. The agency argues this eliminates vital competition, harming both rental advertisers and renters who rely on ILSs. The case cites violations of the Sherman Act, Clayton Act, and FTC Act. Real Estate News has requested comment from both companies and will report updates as they come.
