Gates' Ultra-Luxury Yacht to Hit Market for $645M, Never Occupied by Owner

Superyacht designed to run on liquid hydrogen set for Monaco Yacht Show debut.

A
390-foot superyacht, dubbed "Breakthrough" and listed for $645 million, is set to make its debut at the Monaco Yacht Show this September. Commissioned by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, the vessel boasts a unique fuel system that runs entirely on liquid hydrogen.

Built by Dutch shipyard Feadship over five years, Breakthrough features seven decks, including a beach club-style infinity pool, basketball court, private hospital, cinema, and multiple libraries. The yacht can accommodate 30 guests across 15 cabins and 43 crew members.

What sets Breakthrough apart is its next-generation hydrogen fuel cell platform, which allows the vessel to operate entirely off compressed liquid hydrogen stored below deck at minus 253 degrees Celsius. A secondary biofuel system supplies electricity when hydrogen is unavailable, reducing emissions by 90%.

The owner's quarters span four private floors and include a gym, pantry, living room, and two offices with fireplaces. Discreet balconies slide out from the hull at the touch of a button, offering private lifestyle destinations at each deck level.

"This is the one that will change it all," said Jamie Edmiston, CEO of yacht brokerage Edmiston, which is handling the sale. "The brief was to build the greenest and most environmentally advanced yacht ever built, without compromise."

Canadian billionaire Patrick Dovigi is reportedly in line to acquire Breakthrough, which is expected to be the largest yacht on display at the Monaco Yacht Show.
