Georgia estate once shunned by locals now seeks $40 million buyer

Contemporary home on Sea Island seeks $40 million listing.

O
n Sea Island in Georgia, a striking contemporary home designed by late Atlanta architect John Portman is now on the market for $40 million, making it one of the most expensive properties in the state. Dubbed Entelechy II, this 12,586-square-foot estate embodies the Greek concept of realizing potential and boasts an exterior marked by a grid-like canopy, massive columns, and lush greenery.

Built in the 1980s, the property was initially met with disdain from neighbors who found its design unappealing. However, over time, the draping jasmine has softened its appearance, transforming it into a lovingly preserved time capsule of the era.

The estate features seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms, and an array of unique design elements, including a pyramid-shaped staircase, a reflecting pool in the courtyard, and brightly colored sculptures adorning the grounds. The interior boasts massive glass exposures offering exterior views from within, as well as skylights, a dining room surrounded by greenery, and a living area under a grid-like ceiling.

According to Portman's daughter, Jana Portman Simmons, her father had complete creative freedom in designing Entelechy II, allowing him to express himself in a playful way. The property has been held by the family's charitable foundation since 2017, but IRS restrictions dictate that it cannot be used for personal means. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the foundation, supporting art, education, and health initiatives.

The listing is shared between Chase Mizell of Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby's International Realty and Susan Imhoff and Ann Harrell of DeLoach Sotheby's International Realty.
