esidents in Richmond are being sent 2025 second-half real estate tax bills directly, a departure from the usual practice of sending them to mortgage lenders for payment. According to city officials, these bills accurately reflect what taxpayers owe, but the sudden change has left many confused.
The issue stems from a data import problem that occurred last week when the city's Department of Finance was updating taxpayer records from mortgage lenders. Over 33,000 records were not fully imported, resulting in missing information needed to direct bills to lenders. This glitch is attributed to an upgrade to the MUNIS system used for real estate billing.
The Department of Finance is working with the MUNIS team to resolve the issue and will reimport the data once the problem is identified. In the meantime, residents who normally receive their tax bill from their lender should contact them to confirm payment arrangements. Those paying their own bills must ensure timely payment by June 16.
