West Bend landmark is disappearing as the iconic Hankerson's Bakery sign was removed from W. Washington Street in West Bend, WI. Jeremiah Hembel captured the moment on May 17, 2025, at 10:45 a.m.
Hankerson's, which had been a staple in the community since 1970 and operated by three generations of the Hankerson family, was known for its wide variety of baked goods, including donuts, hard rolls, coffee cakes, breads, cookies, and more. The restaurant arm of the business opened in 1975.
The bakery's closure in July 2024 marked the end of an era for many West Bend residents who made Hankerson's a regular part of their morning routine. However, a new venture is set to take over the location at 2107 W. Washington Street. Lynn Ehnert Eldredge and Jamie Selsing are teaming up to open Creative Brews, which will feature coffee, bakery items, and gifts.
Creative Brews plans to offer simple grab-and-go breakfast and lunch options as well as an expanded bakery selection once a commercial kitchen is installed. The new shop aims to open in the fall of 2025.
