Homebuyers reveal what turns them off in a home purchase

New Survey Reveals What Homebuyers Won't Compromise On, Budget-Friendly or Not.

A
recent survey sheds light on what homebuyers refuse to compromise on when searching for a new home. While layout and natural light are crucial factors, the real dealbreakers can make or break a sale. According to the 2024 State of Homebuying survey, conducted by Apartment Therapy, busy streets, outdated homes, and lack of parking spaces are major turn-offs.

In fact, all surveyed buyers (100%) stood firm on their non-negotiables, refusing to budge on issues like garage space or needed updates. Real estate agents, however, advise clients not to sweat the small stuff – minor cosmetic changes can be easily made – but rather focus on significant features that can't be altered.

The survey reveals that buyers are prioritizing essential aspects: 80% consider a home's layout and 68% seek natural light. Recent buyers also moved quickly, with an average search time of 7.5 months, while current shoppers take nearly nine months to find their ideal home.

Interestingly, most recent buyers (68%) had a budget under $500,000, with 34% aiming for less than $300,000. Despite this, over two-thirds were able to stay within their means and become homeowners. Some even found homes outside their desired neighborhoods, highlighting the importance of flexibility in the homebuying process.

Home tours are also on the rise, with would-be buyers viewing an average of 13 properties, while recent homeowners saw around 10. The survey provides valuable insights into what matters most to homebuyers and how they navigate the complex homebuying landscape.
