Industry leaders take proactive steps against housing bias

Professional sports organizations pledge to boost community inclusivity, mirroring Realtor efforts.

P
rofessional sports organizations are joining forces to create inclusive communities, echoing efforts made by real estate professionals over a year ago with their Stop Hate in Real Estate (SHIRE) initiative. This movement aims to combat hate and discrimination in various forms.

The SHIRE initiative was launched by the Asian Real Estate Association of America, LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance, National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals, and WomanUP! in September 2023. Since then, housing discrimination has persisted, with recent examples including a federal court challenge to Florida's SB 264 law and attacks on Hispanic immigrants.

Despite efforts to address housing discrimination, disparities in homeownership rates remain stark. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, non-Hispanic Whites have a significantly higher homeownership rate than Asian American Pacific Islanders, Hispanics, and the Black community. The LGBTQ+ community also faces significant barriers to homeownership.

Over 2,000 industry professionals have taken the SHIRE pledge, which emphasizes the importance of combating hate and promoting diversity in real estate. As Ryan Weyandt, CEO of the LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance, notes, "We're better than that. We're above that." He encourages others to take the pledge at StopHateinRealEstate.org and join the movement towards creating inclusive communities.
