Japanese real estate company invests in first land-based salmon farm

Mori Trust invests in Pure Salmon Japan's land-based aquaculture project, reducing reliance on imported Atlantic salmon and promoting sustainability.

P
ure Salmon Technology has secured a strategic investment from Mori Trust, one of Japan's leading real estate and investment firms. This support is for the 8F Aquaculture Fund Japan I LP, backing a cutting-edge land-based aquaculture project in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture. The initiative, spearheaded by Pure Salmon Japan, aims to revolutionize Atlantic salmon farming in Asia with its pioneering use of recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) technology.

The investment follows a significant funding round announced in February, which will complete the USD 460 million Tsu City facility. This collaboration marks a crucial step towards Japan's sustainable seafood development. By utilizing land-based RAS systems, Pure Salmon Technology ensures biosecure and antibiotic-free salmon production, unaffected by marine pollution or climate-related disruptions.

The first harvest is scheduled for 2027, aligning with national goals to boost Japan's seafood self-sufficiency. Currently, the country imports all its Atlantic salmon. This facility will directly meet domestic demand for safe, fresh, high-quality, and environmentally responsible seafood. Errol Ahmed, CEO of Pure Salmon Japan, highlighted Mori Trust as a valued partner that shares their vision for a more sustainable aquaculture industry.

The partnership with Mori Trust will not only enhance low-carbon infrastructure but also advance decarbonisation goals through efficient, sustainable aquaculture practices. Pure Salmon Japan and Mori Trust aim to drive land-based aquaculture in Japan by combining innovative technology with a shared focus on sustainability.
