T
he penthouse triplex that Joan Rivers once called home is back on the market after nearly four years, this time with a significant discount. The 4,661-square-foot aerie at 1 E. 62nd St. has been listed for $28 million, down from its initial asking price of $38 million in 2021.
Rivers lived in the penthouse for 28 years, filling it with her passion for worldly antiques and entertaining A-list guests like Princess Diana. The space features ceiling medallions, wall moldings, and a grand ballroom with 23-foot ceilings and elegant parquet-de-Versailles flooring.
The property was purchased by Prince Muhammad bin Faud in 2015 for $28 million, just a year after Rivers' death from brain damage sustained during a medical procedure. The penthouse has three levels and is being marketed as a five-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom home with a corner-paneled library and formal dining room.
Rivers famously served as president of the building's condominium board and claimed to have encountered a ghost in the home, which she referred to as "Mrs. Spencer." The listing, from Compass, highlights the residence's lavish decor, including gilded ceiling medallions and wall moldings, but notes that the interior is largely empty.
The penthouse sits atop a 42-foot-wide limestone mansion designed by architect Horace Trumbauer in a neo-French Classical style. Rivers bought it in 1988, a year after her husband Edgar Rosenberg's death. The property offers breathtaking views of Central Park and is now available for $28 million.
