oseph Canizaro, a renowned real estate developer and philanthropist, left an indelible mark on New Orleans and beyond. With over 10 million square feet of commercial developments under his belt, he transformed the city's skyline with iconic projects like One Canal Place, Ritz Carlton, and First Bank & Trust Tower.
As President/CEO of Columbus Properties, founded in 1966, Canizaro spearheaded numerous high-profile ventures, including the International Trade Mart (now Loews Hotel) and the Information Technology Center Office Complex. His business acumen extended to Mississippi, where he developed Tradition, a $2 billion mixed-use community in Biloxi.
Canizaro's philanthropic efforts were equally impressive, with donations to Loyola University, MGCCC, and Catholic organizations through his Donum De Foundation. He also founded Legatus, an international organization of Catholic business executives, and established the Canizaro Center for Catholic Studies at Loyola University.
Gayle Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans, praised Canizaro's contributions to the city's vibrancy, saying, "His vision over several decades continues to be visible throughout the region." Canizaro passed away on June 20, 2025, at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to shape New Orleans for generations to come.
