La Salle Issues 15-Day Notice to CL Real Estate on Maytag, Kaskaskia Properties

CL Real Estate must complete repairs by month's end on La Salle properties.

L
a Salle's downtown Maytag and Kaskaskia properties are on a tight deadline. CL Real Estate has until the end of the month to address structural concerns identified during a January 8 inspection. The city sent a letter to CLRED on March 12, stating its intention to take action within 15 days if repairs aren't made.

Alderman Jim Bacidore inquired about the status at Monday's council meeting. Mayor Jeff Grove confirmed that letters had been mailed out, while City Engineer Brian Brown anticipated an update by the next council gathering. "We should either have no news or a response," he said.

The inspection revealed structural issues with both buildings, which were discussed during the February council meeting. The city listed 12 items for the Maytag building, including documentation of structural modifications and repairs to brickwork, windows, and sidewalks. For the Kaskaskia, 11 items needed attention, such as repairing the garage roof and restoring loose masonry.

CLRED President Steven Hussey responded via email, assuring the city that they want both buildings to meet safety standards and are working on the requested repairs. "We've already completed many of these tasks and have more scheduled for the coming weeks," he said. However, some items will require longer than 15 days to complete.

Hussey noted that CLRED typically handles historical property development and restoration, which can be more challenging than new builds. Despite past efforts and investments, they've faced unexpected obstacles with the Kaskaskia and Maytag buildings. The company aims to collaborate with La Salle to safeguard the properties and find a solution. Hussey hopes for concrete progress by spring.
