LA Wildfires Devastate Iconic Hollywood Mansions, Including 'Hacks' Set Home

Notable loss: 1915 Spanish Colonial Revival mansion in Altadena.

T
he Los Angeles wildfires have ravaged several historic Hollywood landmarks, beloved filming locations for classic films and hit TV shows. Among the devastating losses is the 1915 Spanish Colonial Revival mansion in Altadena, prominently featured in HBO's "Hacks." The estate, which served as the lavish side mansion of Jean Smart's character Deborah Vance, has been gutted by the Eaton Fire.

Only the facade remains of the once-grand home, with eyewitness accounts suggesting that it was reduced to rubble. Due to ongoing evacuation orders, the extent of the damage has not been independently verified. The mansion had become a recurring backdrop for "Hacks," appearing in two to three episodes each season.

The estate's history dates back over a century, first appearing on film in Max Linder's 1921 movie "Seven Years Bad Luck." It was later featured in TV series like "Knots Landing" and "Ratched." The mansion's distinct pink exterior made it a sought-after location for productions.

The destruction extends beyond "Hacks," with the historic Crank House, recognizable from films like "Matilda" and "Scream 2," under severe threat. Other threatened locations include the house featured in "Step Brothers" and the stately Rubio Street mansions, which have hosted productions from "Risky Business" to "This Is Us."

The loss of these landmarks feels deeply personal for key assistant locations manager Scott Kradolfer, who formed close bonds with the neighborhood during filming. He reflected on the mansion's unique design, saying it had natural beauty despite being polarizing. The estate was last purchased in 2000 for $1.5 million and occupied over 7,100 square feet.

The wildfires have claimed more than 1,000 buildings around America's second-biggest city, forcing tens of thousands of people from their homes. Actor John C. Reilly is among those affected, with three families on the same block as the mansion confirming they lost their homes in the fires.
