T
he Bing Crosby estate, a 13,635-square-foot French chateau-style residence with 11 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms, has hit the market for $40 million. The property, situated on 5.38 acres in Hillsborough's prestigious neighborhood, boasts a rich Hollywood history dating back nearly a century. Originally built in 1929, the estate was renovated by Crosby and his wife Kathryn, who added unique antique furniture and wood paneling from William Randolph Hearst's collection.
The couple made significant changes to the property, including commissioning renowned San Francisco artist Al Proom to decorate the dining room walls. Today, the estate features a custom dressing room, library with fireplace and built-in bookcase, and paintings of desert landscapes. The property has a total 18,535 square feet, including both finished and unfinished areas.
"This isn't just a home; it's a landmark of California's golden era," said listing agent Jennifer Gilson of Sotheby's International Realty. "The estate's French chateau-inspired architecture, its ties to icons like Bing Crosby, and its connection to the legendary Seabiscuit create a rich history that few properties can claim."
Bing Crosby first visited the home when it belonged to Lindsay Howard, who commissioned the property as a wedding gift for his new bride. After Charles Howard's death, the property changed hands twice before Crosby finally purchased it in the early 1960s.
The listing would easily surpass the current Hillsborough record set by Elon Musk's property sale in 2021 for $30 million. The estate is a legacy property, steeped in sophistication and timeless appeal, making it an extraordinary opportunity for the next owner.
