T
he intersection of East 2nd Street and Bowery is home to Joey Ramone Place, a nod to the punk frontman's early years living in Arturo Vega's loft at 6 East 2nd. However, after a few years, Joey moved just a ten-minute walk away to a studio apartment at 115 East 9th Street, where he remained until his death in 2001.
The studio apartment has been gut renovated by the current owner, who purchased it from Joey's brother in 2018. The space still retains its original charm, with a similar layout and decor as when Joey lived there. A photo from 1987 shows Joey lounging on a sectional couch in the living room/main room, surrounded by framed band posters and a golden record.
When the current owner renovated the apartment, he discovered a cache of Joey's papers hidden behind kitchen cabinets. The collection included fan mail, handwritten lyrics, copies of reviews, and a letter from a Boston College student upset about the school's cancellation of a 1987 Ramones concert. The seller will pass along this memorabilia with the apartment.
The studio is now on the market for $575,000, a price point in line with other studios in the building. The full-service building offers a full-time doorman, storage, and laundry room, making it an attractive option for buyers. With its prime location near Wegmans and the Astor Place subway station, this apartment is sure to be a hit with music fans and East Village enthusiasts alike.
