I
traded in the grey skies of England for a life of sun-kissed days on Koh Samui, Thailand. It's been nine years since my family and I made the bold decision to leave behind the familiarity of our UK home and embark on a new adventure.
As we navigated the island's tranquil waters, I realized that it was more than just a vacation spot – it was an ideal place to raise our daughter. The slower pace of life, the warm weather, and the community-oriented way of life all combined to create a haven for us.
My ex-husband and I had always been drawn to Thailand, but it wasn't until we had our daughter that we decided to take the plunge and make Samui our permanent home. We sold his business in the UK and moved to the island in 2016, purchasing a small resort where we could live on-site.
However, as time passed, I found myself itching for a new challenge. After 18 months of working at the resort, I returned to my roots in real estate, focusing on selling luxury villas on the island. The industry has seen significant growth since the pandemic, with more families and remote workers flocking to Samui's laid-back lifestyle.
As an expat, adjusting to life in Thailand presented some initial challenges – from navigating language barriers to finding affordable European delicacies. But the island's large expat community and welcoming locals made it easier than I expected.
One of the most significant advantages of living on Samui is its relaxed atmosphere. Gone are the days of rushing to get anywhere; instead, I find myself spending hours soaking up the sun and admiring the island's natural beauty. The beaches, warm weather, and community-oriented way of life have made it a perfect place to raise our daughter.
Healthcare on the island has also improved significantly over the years, with more private hospitals opening their doors. While I do pay for private insurance, I feel well-covered and safe.
As I look ahead, I'm excited to see what the future holds for my family and me. With my daughter settled in her international school, we're likely to stay on Samui for at least five more years. For now, this island feels like home – a place where I can breathe easy, enjoy life's simple pleasures, and watch our daughter thrive in a beautiful and supportive environment.
