ontrary to the belief that Westchester tops New York’s pricey suburbs, a fresh analysis shows Long Island dominates the list. GOBankingRates ranked the state’s most expensive communities by aggregating monthly costs for mortgage, groceries, utilities, healthcare, and transportation. The data came from the U.S. Census American Community Survey, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the 2023 Consumer Expenditure Survey.
Sands Point, a small upscale waterfront enclave on Long Island, emerged as the costliest town in the state. Residents face an average monthly bill of $17,400, with a mortgage payment of $14,787. The median home price there is $2.98 million. Old Westbury follows with $15,889 per month, and Muttontown ranks third.
Within Westchester, Larchmont tops the cost list, followed by Southampton and Montauk. Other Westchester towns in the top 20—Bronxville, Armonk, Chappaqua, and Pelham—each exceed $9,000 monthly for essentials.
