n the aftermath of Los Angeles' devastating fires, City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto has taken a bold stance against Blueground US Inc., a global player in furnished rentals. The lawsuit alleges that the company exploited vulnerable residents by engaging in egregious price gouging, flouting state emergency regulations that cap rent increases at 10% above pre-fire levels.
The city attorney's office has identified over a dozen instances of alleged price gouging, including a downtown Los Angeles apartment where Blueground more than doubled the rent from $4,140 to $5,400. This egregious example highlights the company's brazen disregard for those affected by the disaster.
As a middleman between property owners and tenants, Blueground's business model allows it to operate with relative impunity. However, its actions have not gone unnoticed. Feldstein Soto has vowed to hold the company accountable, stating that "taking advantage of Angelenos in their most vulnerable moment is not only unconscionable, but also illegal." This latest move follows a pattern of authorities cracking down on price gouging since reports of widespread exploitation began surfacing.
The California attorney general's office has already filed multiple criminal cases against L.A.-area real estate agents, and online listings platforms like Zillow have removed offending listings. As the city continues to rebuild, Feldstein Soto's lawsuit serves as a powerful reminder that those who would seek to profit from others' misfortune will be held accountable.
