Luxury lakefront estate listed for $11 million in upscale suburbia

Lakefront mansion in Glencoe poised for record-breaking $11m sale on North Shore's highest residential sale in over five years.

A
Glencoe lakefront mansion is poised to become the suburb's highest residential sale in over five years, pending a buyer at or near its $10.9 million asking price. The 5,550-square-foot estate at 21 Lakewood Drive features unobstructed views of Lake Michigan and was rebuilt by architect Tony Grunsfeld in the early 2000s to give it a modern aesthetic. Grunsfeld's minimalist yet dramatic design is reflected in the home's soaring ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and five bedrooms, seven bathrooms.

The property sits on over 2 acres and includes an office, billiard room, exercise room, artist's studio, pool, and 3-car garage. Dennis Carlton, an emeritus professor of economics at the University of Chicago, is selling the home with his wife Jane, who have relocated to Bethesda, Maryland. Glencoe has seen a few high-end sales in recent years, but none have surpassed $10 million since Eric Lefkofsky's 2014 purchase of a lakefront home for $19.5 million.

The sale would be one of several notable transactions in Chicago's suburban luxury market this year, which has broken records with deals like a $5.3 million mansion in South Barrington and a $3.1 million home in Arlington Heights.
