Luxury Resort Expansion: $8B Makeover Adds New Tower and Infinity Pool

Asia's most popular destination is set for a major transformation with the construction of a new tower.

S
ingapore's iconic Marina Bay Sands resort is undergoing an $8 billion expansion, adding a fourth tower and a 15,000-seat arena to its existing complex. The massive project, which broke ground this month, has sparked both excitement and criticism from locals.

The new tower, designed by the original architect Moshe Safdie, will be situated on an adjacent plot, rather than connecting directly to the other three skyscrapers. Safdie aimed to create a design that complements the originals while establishing its own identity. The 55-story extension will feature 570 suites, luxury retail and gaming facilities, as well as a unique facade twisting at a 45-degree angle.

The fourth tower's crowning glory is the "Skyloop," a 76,000-square-foot rooftop space with infinity-edge pools, an observatory, restaurants, and lush gardens. The new development will also include a massive event venue, designed by the team behind the Las Vegas Sphere, which will host conferences, exhibitions, and sports events.

The expansion aims to attract more tourism revenue from business travelers and leisure tourists alike. However, local reactions have been mixed, with some comparing the design to an awkward neighbor or a "huge dehumidifier." Safdie remains confident that the new development will eventually win over the public's affection, saying it will soon feel like it's always been there.
