A
massive redevelopment project surrounding Chicago's United Center arena is taking shape. The Reinsdorf and Wirtz families, owners of the Bulls, Blackhawks, and United Center, are seeking zoning approval for a 55-acre mixed-use district on the Near West Side. Dubbed the 1901 Project, it will transform the area from surface parking lots into a vibrant neighborhood.
The plan involves building nearly 9,500 apartments, including 1,893 affordable units, as well as over 1,300 hotel rooms and a residential high-rise that will redefine Chicago's skyline. The project also includes 25 acres of open space for community parks and recreational areas.
A key component is a 6,000-seat music hall on Damen Avenue and Adams Street, which will fill a gap in Chicago's entertainment scene by offering a mid-sized venue. Phase one will feature a mixed-use building with retail, parking, and an elevated park connecting to nearby facilities.
While the project is still in its early stages, the owners have stated they won't seek public financial assistance, although city infrastructure support may be necessary as it progresses.
