Marriott, a leading hospitality company, has recently acquired a 1.3-acre site located at 210 Peachtree Street in Atlanta, which is home to the Westin Peachtree Plaza, a 1,073-room hotel. This acquisition was made possible through a deal worth $50 million, which was finalized on August 21.

The site's history dates back to the early 1900s when it served as one of Georgia's original governor's mansions. This Victorian-style residence housed 17 governors before being demolished in 1923 to make way for the Henry Grady Hotel. In turn, the Henry Grady Hotel was replaced by the Westin Peachtree Plaza in 1972, which was designed by renowned Atlanta architect John Portman.

The Westin Peachtree Plaza is an architectural marvel known for its unique cylindrical design, soaring 723 feet into the air. Upon its completion, it became the tallest building in Atlanta, holding this title until 1987. Marriott's acquisition of the hotel dates back to 2016 when it merged with Starwood Hotels & Resorts.

The acquisition of the land beneath the Westin Peachtree Plaza was made possible after Governor Brian Kemp signed a House Resolution authorizing its sale to Marriott in May. However, neither Marriott nor the Georgia State Properties Commission, which oversaw the transaction, provided any comments on the deal.

This acquisition marks a significant milestone in Marriott's expansion strategy in Atlanta, as they now own both the hotel and the land beneath it. It remains to be seen how this will impact the future of the Westin Peachtree Plaza and its iconic design in the city's skyline.
