Midtown Gets a Taste of Soho with MAMO Restaurant Arrival

Italian restaurant to occupy former Wolfgang's steakhouse space.

T
he Lipstick Building in Midtown Manhattan, infamous for its past as the headquarters of Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme, is getting a fresh start with a revamped dining scene. Soho Italian restaurant MAMO will replace Wolfgang's steakhouse at the iconic property, taking over 7,000 square feet on the East 53rd Street side.

MAMO's space includes 5,000 square feet on the ground floor and 2,000 square feet on the lower level. The new restaurant is expected to open early next year, bringing a touch of Italian Riviera-inspired cuisine to the building. SL Green, the city's largest commercial landlord, signed the lease with MAMO after rescuing the troubled tower five years ago.

The Lipstick Building has had its share of ups and downs over the decades, including foreclosures, bankruptcy filings, and a revolving door of previous owners. However, under SL Green's ownership, the property has seen a dramatic return to glory, with major office tenants like EuroConsult, Inc., and law firm Reitler Kailas & Rosenblatt.

SL Green recently invested $16 million in renovating and brightening the lobby, which now features a Daniel Boulud coffee bar. The developer's efforts have paid off, transforming the Lipstick Building into a desirable destination for both office workers and diners.

MAMO restaurant opens in Midtown, bringing Soho-style cuisine to Manhattan.
