Minnesota woman re-sentenced for murder of real estate agent

Woman gets 20-year sentence after pleading guilty to role in Minnesota real estate agent's murder.

A
woman who had her life sentence overturned after being convicted of murdering a Minnesota real estate agent has accepted a plea deal. Elsa Segura will serve 20 years in prison for kidnapping to commit great bodily harm or terrorize Monique Baugh, whose murder shocked the real estate industry in 2019. The victim's family is outraged by the deal, feeling it doesn't reflect the severity of the crime.

Segura initially received a life sentence after being found guilty in 2021, but the Minnesota Supreme Court overturned her conviction due to faulty jury instructions. Prosecutors claimed Segura lured Baugh to a fake home showing, leading to her murder on New Year's Eve 2019. Two other suspects, Berry Alexander Davis and Cedric Lamont Berry, were also convicted of murder and received life sentences without parole.

The state supreme court upheld their convictions, but they will serve concurrent sentences for kidnapping and attempted murder ahead of their life sentences. Lyndon Wiggins, the alleged mastermind behind the plot, had his conviction overturned as well, but is being held in jail pending retrial. The case has led to a review of security practices within the real estate industry.
