ackie Gleason's futuristic home in Westchester County has resurfaced on the market with a significant price cut. The $5.5 million listing, dubbed "The Mothership," was originally commissioned by the late comedian as an escape from filming "The Honeymooners." A UFO enthusiast and paranormal aficionado, Gleason spared no expense in creating his circular Cortlandt Manor home.
Crafted by a Scandinavian shipbuilder, the property's remarkable carpentry is matched only by its comedic cachet. The ambitious engineering project, overseen by Robert Cika, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, took several years to complete and cost $650,000. Some assembly reportedly took place inside an airplane hangar.
The home's living room features massive marble fireplaces that were delivered via helicopter, while the property's three bars and marble dance floor hosted A-list guests like Marilyn Monroe and Richard Nixon. The pair, who were golfing buddies, even feature in a conspiracy theory surrounding extraterrestrial encounters.
The 3,950-square-foot residence is a mid-century time capsule under a copper roof, with no right angles in sight. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the circular space with light, complemented by impressive craftsmanship above. The home's exposed wooden ceiling trusses resemble row boats, and some vents look like stylized fish.
The property sits on 8.6 acres of solid Hudson Valley ground, about an hour north of New York City. Elsewhere on the property are two guesthouses: a smaller "spaceship" used as a bunkhouse and glamping site, and "The Barracks," a 1930s stone house. The unique home was sold back to CBS when Gleason relocated to Miami in the 1960s and has changed hands twice more since.
Corcoran agent Heidi Henshaw holds the current listing for $5.5 million, a significant discount from its previous price of $12 million in 2018.
