NAR Leadership Endorses Initiative to Revitalize Association Culture

Eleven recommendations promote a unified organizational culture through clear values, policy alignment, and leadership development.

T
he National Association of REALTORS has adopted a set of objectives aimed at enhancing its culture through 10 out of 11 recommendations from the Culture Transformation Commission (CTC). The approved recommendations focus on policies, initiatives centered on the organization's mission and values, governance, compliance, and leadership.

    Key recommendations include:

    * Creating an accountability awareness campaign to ensure members understand NAR policies and procedures

    * Developing a transparent disciplinary framework for infractions in conduct-related policies

    * Requiring annual training to reinforce expectations and accountability policies among volunteers and staff

    * Establishing culture and accountability bodies for volunteers and staff

    * Enhancing online resources for state and local associations to support compliance and accountability

The CTC was formed in response to reports of harassment, intimidation, and retaliation by former leaders. The group's tri-chair, Christina Pappas, emphasizes that "culture is not built overnight" and change takes time.

Implementation of the policy recommendations will be led by staff and relevant committees. NAR CEO Nykia Wright notes that this is only the first step towards true culture transformation, which comes from daily interactions and embracing these objectives.

The association has taken several steps to ensure a healthy culture moving forward, including welcoming its first Chief Human Resources Officer, Sharon White, who will focus on maintaining a healthy association environment. Two new groups, the culture and accountability bodies, will be tasked with implementing and reviewing culture and accountability surveys, tracking progress, and advising NAR leadership.
