NAR revises hate speech policy, softening stance

Board of directors' vote clarifies anti-harassment standards, making them more legally defensible.

T
he National Association of Realtors' board of directors has approved an updated standard that clarifies and strengthens anti-harassment policies. Despite impassioned testimony from advocates, the vote aims to make these standards more legally defensible.

    Key changes include:

    * The updated standard prohibits harassment based on protected characteristics such as race, sex, religion, disability, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity when Realtors are on the job or engaging in real estate-related activities.

    * A clear definition of harassment is added: unwelcome behavior that creates a hostile, abusive, or intimidating environment affecting access to services or employment opportunities.

Supporters argue this update maintains the original spirit of the policy while making it more enforceable.

Opponents, however, express concerns about rolling back progress made with the original approval and creating confusion among local associations dealing with complaints. They question how subjective calls will be made regarding social media posts and comments at community meetings.
